(Százhalombatta / Hungary) – The Hungarian oil and gas company MOL Group has completed a 10-megawatt green hydrogen production plant in Százhalombatta, near Budapest. According to the company, this is "the largest in Central and Eastern Europe." The investment totaled 22 million euros.

The electrolysis equipment from US manufacturer Plug Power uses electricity from renewable sources. MOL will mainly use the green hydrogen itself in the production of fuels. The annual production of a forecast 1.600 tons is expected to initially reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the Danube refinery by 25.000 tons. Commissioning is scheduled for the second half of 2024. The energy source will then gradually replace the natural gas previously used.
The MOL Group also wants to replace natural gas with hydrogen at other locations, namely in Rijeka and Bratislava. “After Százhalombatta, we will bring the technology to the group's other two fuel production units to make the process more sustainable in each MOL Group refinery,” said CEO József Molnár at the inauguration ceremony of the new facility.
