(Abu Dhabi / United Arab Emirates) – The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Environment (MEME) of the Kingdom of Morocco want to work more closely together to pool knowledge in the field of renewable energy. In particular, the green hydrogen economy sector should be promoted.
As part of a strategic agreement now signed by IRENA Director General Francesco La Camera and Moroccan Energy Minister Aziz Rabbah, the two parties will carry out studies and explore possible policy instruments to involve the private sector in the green hydrogen economy at the national level.
Joint analyzes would also be carried out to further explore the socio-economic benefits of renewable energy, with a focus on the development of new value chains and job creation at the national level. More broadly, IRENA and Morocco will work together to define the policy and regulatory framework for the deployment of renewable energy and strengthen the application of energy efficiency in the Kingdom.
The European Commission and Morocco, together with IRENA, drafted a framework for international trade in green hydrogen under the title “Collaborative Framework on Green Hydrogen” in May. This should be used to develop cross-border plans for the development of infrastructure, technology and certification.
Morocco wants to increase the share of renewable energies in power plants to an installed capacity of more than 2030 percent by 52. According to IRENA, the Kingdom of Morocco had an installed renewable energy capacity of almost 2020 gigawatts at the end of 3,5.
