(Mallorca/Spain) – The first plant for the production of green hydrogen was officially put into operation on the Balearic island of Mallorca. The electrolyser in Lloseta is intended to help “position Spain as a reference center for renewable hydrogen in southern Europe,” explain the initiators.

Under the leadership of the Spanish natural gas transmission system operator Enagás and the Spanish infrastructure company Acciona SA, the Mexican cement manufacturer CEMEX and the IDAE institute (Instituto para la Diversificación y Ahorro de la Energía), which reports to the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Change, are involved. The consortium includes a further 30 companies from the entire hydrogen value chain. The project is known as “Power to Green Hydrogen Mallorca“Part of the European Green Hysland initiative. The European Union has provided ten million euros for its implementation.

Electrolyzer is gradually started up

The test run began in December last year. Once the infrastructure is completed, at least 300 tonnes of renewable hydrogen will be produced per year. The renewable electricity required for operation comes from two photovoltaic systems in Lloseta (8,5 megawatts) and Petra (5,85 megawatts).

Part of the gas will be injected into the natural gas network and transported in pipelines that Redexis SA is building on the island in the second quarter of this year. It will also be used to power buses and a gas station, and will also be used to generate heat and electricity for commercial and public buildings. In addition, the Iberostar hotel group is replacing some of its natural gas consumption with renewable hydrogen, according to a statement.

This project initiates a development of “great importance,” said Spain’s Minister of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera. Dependence on imports of fossil fuels will be reduced and replaced with renewable gases such as biogas, biomethane and hydrogen.
