(Owińska/Poland) – The transport company EMT-Palma has acquired the Polish bus manufacturer Solaris Bus & Coach sp. z oo commissioned to deliver five hydrogen-powered vehicles of the “Urbino 12 hydrogen” type to the Balearic island. These are to be used in the city of Palma de Mallorca in the future. According to the company, the contract value is around four million euros. There was no word on when the job would be completed.

The buses have a range of 350 kilometers and refueling only takes a few minutes. Solaris' “Urbino 12 hydrogen” is already operating in Bolzano (Italy), Cologne, Wuppertal and the Zuid-Holland province in the Netherlands. The model came onto the market in 2019. The manufacturer has announced an articulated bus “Urbino 18 hydrogen” for the second half of this year.

Hydrogen buses as part of “Green Hyslan”

The purchase is part of the EU-funded “Green Hyslan” project, which involves 30 companies and organizations from eleven countries. As part of this, the “Power to Green Hydrogen Mallorca” project was launched. This is a hydrogen project by industry and science led by the Spanish natural gas transmission system operator Enagás SA. The electricity from two solar power plants, which are being built in the cities of Lloseta (8,59 megawatts) and Petra (6,5 megawatts) and will go into full operation this year, will be used to produce hydrogen in the order of 300 tons annually used on the premises of the cement manufacturer CEMEX in Lloseta.

In addition to buses, the green energy source is also used for other fuel cell vehicles on the island and to supply commercial and public buildings with electricity and heat, as well as for ferries and port operations. Any surpluses are fed into the gas network.
