(Copenhagen / Denmark) – The Danish logistics group AP Moller-Maersk A/S wants to produce up to two million tons of green fuels per year in Spain. The project is initially preceded by a feasibility study. The company and the Spanish company have a corresponding declaration of intent
Government now signed. The project aims to investigate how the entire value chain from renewable energy sources to ship bunkering can be covered. The regions named Andalusia in the south of the country and Galicia in the northwest are mentioned as production locations. If the project is implemented, up to 85.000 jobs could be created during the construction phase.
Maersk operates one of the world's largest fleets of container ships. In March, the group agreed with several companies that they should have one in China and on the American continent by the end of 2025 Methanol production capacity of at least 730.000 tons. Part of it is needed to power twelve large container ships that the shipping company has commissioned to build. Maersk added six more such ships in October Hyundai heavy industries ordered.
Maersk wants to put a total of 19 ships powered by green methanol into operation between 2023 and 2025. To achieve the emissions target for the fleet by 2030, around six million tonnes of green methanol per year will be necessary, and an even larger amount to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.
