(Guildford, UK) – The British manufacturer of industrial gases Linde plc has received a contract from the Norwegian ferry company Norled to supply liquid hydrogen and the associated infrastructure for what the company says is “the world’s first hydrogen-powered ferry”. The fuel cell-powered ship will transport both cars and passengers and, once operational, will reduce its annual carbon dioxide emissions by up to 95 percent.

Hydrogen from an electrolyzer in Leuna

Linde will provide a full-service solution for the MF Hydra ferry in Norway. The liquid hydrogen will be supplied by Linde's new 24-megawatt electrolyser at the Leuna chemical complex, which will use PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) technology to produce green hydrogen. Linde will also build and install the hydrogen storage, distribution and safety facilities on land and on board. The start of hydrogen supply is planned for 2022, then the plant in Leuna should start production (we reported).
