(Boxberg, Germany) – Lausitz Energie Kraftwerke AG (LEAG) is developing a second power-to-X plant. The site is the decommissioned grounds of the lignite-fired power plant in Boxberg, Saxony. "H2KW" is part of the "H2UB" (Hydrogen Unit and Battery) project. This will utilize surplus electricity generated during periods of high solar and wind power for hydrogen production.
This can be stored at the same location and converted back into electricity and fed into the grid during times of increased electricity demand. The supply of heavy commercial vehicles and trains is also possible. Connection to the future German transport network for gaseous hydrogen is also planned.
2.100 kilograms of hydrogen per hour
According to the company, the first expansion stage includes an electrolysis output of 110 megawatts. This would allow 2.100 kilograms of hydrogen to be produced per hour. The associated storage is designed for a daily production. Fuel cells with an output of ten megawatts were used to convert electricity back into electricity.
The Sweden-based engineering service provider AFRY had already supported LEAG as a technical consultant on a similar project called “Innovative Storage Power Plant” in Jänschwalde, Brandenburg. Now the subsidiaries AFRY Switzerland Ltd and AFRY Deutschland GmbH will support the energy company in preliminary and draft planning, in the approval phase and in the tendering of engineering and construction services (EPC). A period of nine months is planned for the optimization of the concept, the development of the partial approval application and the technical part of the international tender documents.
