(Masdar City / United Arab Emirates) – The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Siemens Energy AG and 13 companies from all industrial sectors have founded a global alliance for the decarbonization of industry. The aim is to make industrial value chains more environmentally friendly.

The coalition was launched by adopting the Bali Declaration in the presence of IRENA General Director Francesco la Camera and Siemens Energy Board Member Karim Amin during the IRENA Energy Transition Investment Forum in Bali, Indonesia. IRENA will coordinate the alliance's activities, with co-founder Siemens Energy taking over as chairman. The first meeting of all members is planned during the UN climate change conference COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, in November.

“Industry pioneer”

About 25 percent of the world's gross domestic product (GDP) is generated by the industrial sector, which also produces about 28 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, the Bali statement said. A multi-stakeholder platform that enables exchange and collaboration could accelerate global climate protection measures.

“Climate action needs industry leaders,” said Francesco La Camera. The alliance “represents the growing commitment of global industry to advance decarbonization and seize the opportunities associated with green industrialization through renewable energy and other transition technologies such as green hydrogen.”

The “Alliance for Industry Decarbonization” currently includes: Siemens Energy AG, Enel Green Power SpA (subsidiary of the Italian energy group Enel SpA), the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company TAQA Arabia, the Italian oil company Eni SpA, the Dutch engineering service provider and plant manufacturer Technip Energies NV , EDF Renewables (subsidiary of the French energy supplier EDF), the Indian steel producer JSW Steel Ltd., the Indian mining group Tata Steel Ltd., the ammonia manufacturer Sable Chemicals Industrial Ltd. from Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwean project developer Tatanga Energy, the Munich management consultancy Roland Berger GmbH, the Spanish oil company Repsol SA and the Norwegian gas company Equinor ASA.

Membership is open to public and private companies and stakeholders operating in energy-intensive sectors.
