A consortium of several Danish companies is planning to build a green hydrogen production plant. The location is the “Greater Copenhagen area”, according to the Danish company Ørsted A/S. The aim is to develop green fuels for road, sea and air transport on an industrial scale and to realize one of the world's largest plants for the production of electrolysis. At the same time, jobs should be created and the export opportunity for green fuels opened up. In addition to the energy company, Copenhagen Airports, the airline SAS, the transport and logistics companies AP Moller - Maersk and DSV Panalpina as well as the shipping company DFDS are involved.

The electrolysis plant will be expanded in three steps and will start with a 10 megawatt electrolyzer. This produces green hydrogen, which is used directly to refuel buses and trucks. Commissioning is planned for 2023. The next stage includes the construction of a 250 megawatt electrolysis plant by 2027. The third expansion stage is expected to increase capacity to 2030 gigawatts by 1,3. According to the company, more than 250.000 tons of green fuel could be delivered annually for buses, trucks, ships and airplanes. It would then be the largest plant of its kind in the world. The future Rønne Banke wind farm could supply the electricity for the production of green hydrogen and synthetic kerosene (e-kerosene). “The prerequisite for this, however, is that the planned offshore wind farm off Bornholm has been implemented by then,” says Ørsted. The project has the potential to replace around five percent of fossil fuels at Copenhagen Airport by 2027 and around 2030 percent by 30.

Ørsted plans, builds and operates onshore and offshore wind farms, solar parks, energy storage systems and biomass power plants. In 2019, the company generated sales of 6.500 billion euros with around 9,1 employees worldwide.
