(Quintero Bay / Chile) – A consortium of companies wants to develop an electrolysis plant that produces green hydrogen as part of a project called “Green Hydrogen Quintero Bay” in Chile. The location is the port city of Quintero, about two hours' drive northwest of the capital Santiago de Chile. The aim is to offer an “energy alternative” that contributes to the ecological recovery of the communities of Puchuncaví and Quintero in the Valparaíso region, according to a statement.
The plant has a rated output of ten megawatts and is expected to initially produce around 500 tonnes per year, which can be gradually increased depending on demand in the region. The investment costs are estimated at 30 million dollars (25 million euros).
The Spanish natural gas transmission system operator Enagás SA, the renewable energy project developer Acciona Energias Renovables, SA and GNL Quintero SA are involved.
international experience
At international level, Enagás and Acciona Energía are already collaborating in the Balearic Islands and are building within the framework of the project ““Power to Green Hydrogen Mallorca” the necessary infrastructure for the production, development and use of green hydrogen on the island. It is funded with ten million euros by the European Commission and is intended to produce at least 300 tons of the gas in Mallorca annually in order to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 20.700 tons per year. 30 partners from 11 countries are involved in this initiative, nine of which are from the European Union as well as Chile and Morocco.
Enagás operates in eight countries. In Chile, the company is the majority shareholder of GNL Quintero with a direct stake of 45,4 percent. Acciona Energy, a subsidiary of the Spanish utility Acciona SA, has renewable energy systems with an installed capacity of eleven gigawatts. GNL Quintero operates a terminal for receiving, unloading and storing liquefied natural gas (LNG). Since its commissioning in 2009, the terminal has been meeting natural gas needs in central and southern Chile.
