(St.John's, Newfoundland / Canada) – Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, Seamus O'Regan, has unveiled a hydrogen strategy. The framework is said to aim to place Canada at the global forefront of “zero-emission fuel technologies.”
The project is supported by a federal investment of 1,5 billion Canadian dollars (0,96 billion euros). Hydrogen has the potential to “reduce our annual greenhouse gas emissions by up to 2030 million tons per year by 45,” explained the minister. 2050 new jobs could be created in Canada by 350.000.
Clean fuel incentives
As one of the ten largest hydrogen producers in the world, Canada is benefiting from growing global demand. A new Clean Fuel Standard aims to spur investment and growth in Canada's fuels sector by incentivizing the development and adoption of clean fuels such as hydrogen.
The hydrogen strategy is the result of three years of research and analysis. The development and discussion involved approximately 1.500 experts and stakeholders, including labor and industry associations, other levels of government, indigenous organizations and academia. It will support the Government of Canada's recently announced climate plan (“A Healthy Environment and a Healthy Economy”).
