Jemena, the operator of electricity and gas networks in Australia, has received approval from the New South Wales (NSW) government for the Sydney Green Gas (WSGG) project, currently “Australia's largest hydrogen demonstration project”. . The investment volume is 15 million dollars (9,1 million euros).
Green hydrogen is produced from solar and wind energy and fed into the gas network in Jemena in New South Wales. In addition, the use of hydrogen in the transport sector and the storage capacities of the gas distribution network are being evaluated. The first electrolyser will be installed this year and the system should go into operation at the beginning of next year. The Australian renewable energy agency ARENA (Australian Renewable Energy Agency) is supporting 50 percent of the project.
Cooperation with Hyundai and Coregas
A few days earlier, Jemena had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to supply green hydrogen to Hyundai Australia's headquarters in Macquarie Park, Sydney, from early 2021. The utility Coregas Pty. Ltd. will provide the technology for a tank infrastructure. A second gas station is under construction in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), with more planned in Melbourne and Brisbane. 20 hydrogen-powered Hyundai Nexo SUVs will soon be deployed by the federal government in the ACT.
The Hydrogen Council estimates that there were over 2018 hydrogen refueling stations worldwide in 330, half of them in Japan and the United States. Their number is expected to increase to over 2025 worldwide by 3.000, which is enough to supply around two million fuel cell electric vehicles with hydrogen. The Hydrogen Council is an initiative of 81 global energy, transport and industrial companies to develop the hydrogen economy.
Jemena is an $11,5 billion company owned by SGSP (Australia) Assets Pty Ltd (SGSPAA). It operates energy supply facilities in Queensland and New South Wales and gas and electricity distribution networks in Victoria and the Northern Territory. It is 60 percent owned by the State Grid Corporation of China and 40 percent owned by Singapore Power.
