(London/Rafnes) – The British Ineos Group wants to build a new supply center for clean hydrogen at the production site in Rafnes, Norway, through its subsidiary Inovyn. A 20 megawatt electrolyzer is planned that will be operated “with carbon-free electricity” of undisclosed origin. This is intended to reduce the carbon footprint of Ineos operations in Norway and serve as a hub for the provision of hydrogen to the Norwegian transport sector, the company said.
Hydrogen for trucks, buses and taxis
According to Geir Tuft, CEO of Inovyn, the company is in discussions to establish a network of gas stations in Norway. They want to produce enough hydrogen to fuel up to 400 buses and trucks or 1.600 taxis every day.
Through its subsidiary Inovyn, chemical group Ineos is Europe's largest operator of electrolysers and currently produces 300.000 tonnes of hydrogen per year, mainly as a by-product in its factories. Ineos announced in November last year that it would establish a London-based division for the mass production of hydrogen (we reported).
According to Inovyn, it is Europe's leading manufacturer of vinyl films and employs 4.200 people. Annual sales are 3,1 billion euros. In Rafnes, various products are manufactured to supply the Ineos plants in Rønningen and Porsgrunn.
