(Gengenbach / Germany) – The Swiss company Infener AG has begun planning for a hydrogen hub in the town of Gengenbach, Baden-Württemberg. The electrolysis capacity is estimated at 20 megawatts. According to the company, up to 2.000 tons of green hydrogen are to be produced annually at this Black Forest location, supplying the Ortenau district with energy in a "decentralized, economical, and climate-neutral manner."
Hub for the production of green hydrogen
Gengenbach's goal is to "establish itself as a location for the production and use of green hydrogen," says Mayor Thorsten Erny. The project on the "Kinzigpark I" industrial estate is currently in the conception phase. Implementation depends on the results of these plans, the conclusion of purchase agreements and the necessary investment decisions. The project is being supported by the municipal utilities, the regional economic development agency and the South Baden climate partners.
Potential for hydrogen and by-products
"Thanks to the high production capacity, we see great potential to attract partners in the region who will further process both hydrogen and the resulting by-products," says Joel Vogl, CEO and co-founder of Infener. Such collaborations "make a significant contribution to the development of a sustainable local ecosystem."
"Supplying business and industry with green hydrogen is crucial for the future viability of locations," says Dominik Fehringer, Managing Director of the regional economic development agency Nectanet. The "Black Forest Power" region is striving for energy self-sufficiency. The H2 hub could "make a decisive contribution to the decarbonization of regional logistics and industrial companies."
20 megawatts in Villingen-Schwenningen
Infener AG, founded in 2023, had already announced the start of construction this year on H2 hubs in Villingen-Schwenningen and Neumünster. As previously reported , a decentralized hydrogen production plant will be built in Villingen-Schwenningen (Baden-Württemberg) on an area of 10.000 square meters in an industrial park.
Production is scheduled to begin in 2026 with a capacity of five megawatts and will be scaled up to 20 megawatts over a period of five years. When fully developed, around 2.000 tons of green hydrogen will be produced there annually. Investments amount to 45 million euros. The design is the responsibility of the Hamburg architecture and design office Hadi Teherani.
