(Kiel) – The state of Schleswig-Holstein is pooling its research on the topic of hydrogen: The “State Competence Center for Hydrogen Research” (HY.SH) has started its work under the umbrella of the Society for Energy and Climate Protection Schleswig-Holstein GmbH (EKSH). Under the leadership of Michael Berger, Scientific Director of the Institute for the Transformation of the Energy System at the West Coast University of Applied Sciences in Heide/Holstein, the HY.SH will, among other things, support the state's research institutions in the acquisition of projects and "use the specialist competencies of the universities and... Bringing together the country’s research institutes,” it says.
The goals include, among others
- to make it easier for the country's research institutions to access national and international networks and the information available there
- Acquisition of funding
- To support specialist decisions and positions on the topic of hydrogen and the energy transition in the country
- to represent the interests of the country and its scientists in the relevant specialist committees and organizations
- To combine environmental, economic, educational and scientific policies on energy transition issues in order to achieve common strategies and measures
One million euros in funding
As a first step, two academic positions will be filled at the EKSH in order to establish the HY.SH competence center. At the same time, a new “H2 fund” is being set up under its umbrella, through which scientists can specialize in hydrogen topics. For both measures, the state is providing a total of around one million euros from its budget for the hydrogen strategy.SH in the development phase until 2023. 
EKSH, the state's universities and energy research association, the Competence Center for Renewable Energies and Climate Protection Schleswig-Holstein (EEK.SH) developed the concept in collaboration with the relevant ministries. “We believe that together we have found a very viable and lasting concept,” explained EKSH managing director Stefan Sievers.
The Society for Energy and Climate Protection Schleswig-Holstein GmbH was founded in 2011. The non-profit company provides around two million euros annually for pilot projects and programs for science and research in energy, environmental protection and education. The shareholders of the EKSH are a GbR made up of the state's universities, Hansewerk AG and the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
For the “Hydrogen Strategy.SHState funding of 2023 million euros will be available until 30. Projects in the areas of hydrogen production, development of hydrogen demand, research and infrastructure development as well as concepts and feasibility studies are eligible for funding. Companies that, as it is said, “install smaller electrolysis systems and develop new methods of hydrogen production” should particularly benefit from this.
