(Dormagen/Krefeld/Erlangen) – The world's largest plant for storing green hydrogen in liquid organic carriers (Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier, LOHC) is to be built at CHEMPARK Dormagen. LOHC can both absorb and release hydrogen through chemical reactions.

The Krefeld-based subsidiary of Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies, LOHC Industrial Solutions NRW GmbH, will take over project management and plant operation. The Erlangen parent company incorporates the technology into the system.

Increased efficiency through heat use

One focus of the project is to integrate the thermal energy released during the LOHC storage process into the steam network and thus into the energy supply of the Dormagen site. The overall efficiency of the LOHC circuit can be significantly increased in this way, says Hydrogenius. Commissioning is scheduled for 2023.

Covestro Deutschland AG – a shareholder of Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies since mid-2019 – is making the space available and wants to supply the green hydrogen. According to the company, around 1.800 tons of gas can be stored annually with their planned capacity.

Supply chain to Rotterdam

A project expansion with the possible establishment of a supply chain for green hydrogen up to Rotterdam is planned with the Dutch co-investor Royal Vopak. There it would be released from the LOHC and used primarily in the areas of mobility and industry. Royal Vopak is active in the storage and distribution of gases, mineral oils and chemical products.

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia is supporting the project with funding from the “progres.nrw – Innovation” program totaling nine million euros. The scientific partner is the Research Center Jülich with its Institute for Energy and Climate Research. The accompanying scientific study is funded with two million euros.
