Australia and Germany signed a memorandum of understanding in September 2024 to conduct a joint hydrogen auction, which is now underway. © H2 Global
(Germany / Australia) The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) has launched a joint tender for green hydrogen products with Australia. This tender, operating under the existing H2Global dual-auction model, aims to support the global market ramp-up of green hydrogen through offtake agreements on the demand side. The BMWi will provide up to €200 million from the Climate and Transformation Fund (KTF) for this purpose over the coming years. The Australian government, represented by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, will contribute an equal amount. The H2Global mechanism facilitates the import and export of renewable hydrogen and its derivatives, including ammonia and methanol, from regions with cost-effective production to markets with high demand. The dual-auction mechanism operates on a Contracts for Difference (CfD) approach: Green hydrogen and its derivatives are purchased at the lowest possible price through 10-year contracts and then sold in Europe to the highest bidder. In the joint tender, these difference costs are shared equally by both countries. The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) has published a questionnaire online that describes the measure and poses specific questions to companies . It will be available until February 16, 2026.
