(Munich, Germany) – Last year, 37 new hydrogen refueling stations opened in Europe, 12 more in Japan, 29 in South Korea, and seven in North America. At the end of 2023, 921 stations were in operation worldwide. Currently, 40 countries have a hydrogen refueling infrastructure in operation or under construction. This is according to the annual survey by Ludwig-Bölkow-Systemtechnik GmbH (LBST).

There are already concrete plans for 338 additional gas station locations outside of China worldwide. New additions to the list of countries with hydrogen filling stations in operation or under construction are Brazil, Oman and Namibia.

According to the list, Europe had 265 hydrogen filling stations at the end of the year. In Germany there were a total of 105 stations, eight were newly opened. France ranks second in Europe with 51 active gas stations, followed by the Netherlands with 22 and Switzerland with 17.

Around 92 percent of the new hydrogen filling stations opened in Europe in 2023 are designed to refuel cars and heavy commercial vehicles (2019: 27 percent). Overall, almost 40 percent of the stations were suitable for both categories. In Germany, 28 of the existing systems for refueling heavy commercial vehicles are currently being modernized.

China is particularly active in Asia: there are a total of 197 hydrogen filling stations there. However, the “actual number could be even higher,” according to LBST, because the sources of information contained a significant degree of uncertainty. In addition, many completed gas stations there are not yet in operation due to a lack of regional operating permits. In Japan, LBST counted 166 hydrogen filling stations, and in South Korea it was possible to refuel vehicles at 2023 locations at the end of 174.

North America opened seven new gas stations last year. There are now a total of eight in Canada, 92 in the USA, 75 of which are in California.
