(Bilbao/Madrid/Oslo) – The Spanish energy supplier Iberdrola SA and the fertilizer company Fertiberia want to invest more than 2027 billion euros in the green hydrogen industry by 1,8. As part of the alliance, a production capacity of 800 megawatts could be built.

4.000 new jobs

The plans include the development of three projects between 2023 and 2027 in the Fertiberia plants of Puertollano (Ciudad Real) and Palos de la Frontera (Huelva). This would create almost 500 qualified jobs with 4.000 local suppliers, half of them by 2023. Industry would also benefit from this, such as the manufacturers of electrolysers in Spain.

20 megawatts are scheduled to go into operation in 2021

According to their own statements, the companies also want to put “Europe’s largest green hydrogen complex” into operation in Puertollano as early as 2021. The yield is used in the Fertiberia ammonia plant in Puertollano. The company is converting production to the use of hydrogen, which reduces natural gas requirements by more than ten percent. The investment is 150 million euros, and development and construction will create 700 jobs.

Nel Hydrogen is supposed to supply electrolyzer

The electrolyzer has an output of 20 megawatts and a production capacity of 200.000 tons per year. The complex includes a 100 megawatt photovoltaic system and a lithium-ion battery system with a storage capacity of 20 megawatt hours.

Iberdrola has selected the Norwegian manufacturer Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser, a division of Nel ASA, as the supplier of the PEM electrolyser. According to him, the contract has not yet been signed and is also subject to the approval of the board.

With the two companies' billion-dollar project, Spain could become the first country to source its ammonia production entirely from green energy sources, said Iberdrola boss Ignacio Galán and Javier Goñi, chairman of Fertiberia, at the presentation. Spain wants to install four gigawatts of hydrogen production capacity by 2030. The 800 megawatt systems would cover 20 percent of the target.
