(Bilbao/Zamudio/Oslo) – The Spanish utility Iberdrola SA and the Basque company Ingeteam SA have founded a new company called “Iberlyzer”. The company will begin operations next year and is expected to build 2023 megawatts of hydrogen production by 200. Iberlyzer requires investments of 100 million euros and creates 150 permanent jobs.

The electrolyzers are supplied by Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser, part of the Norwegian NEL ASA. According to the information, NEL and Iberdrola have already signed a corresponding memorandum of understanding. “This initiative will accelerate the production of green hydrogen in Spain and create a new industry with high growth potential: the production of electrolysis systems,” explained Ignacio Galán, Chairman and CEO of Iberdrola.

Hydrogen for the production of ammonia

It is another project within the alliance between Iberdrola and the Spanish fertilizer group Fertiberia. The proceeds are intended to supply its ammonia factory in Palos de la Frontera (Huelva). Iberdrola and Fertiberia want to invest more than 2027 billion euros in the green hydrogen industry by 1,8 and build a production capacity of 800 megawatts in four stages to supply the two plants in Palos de la Frontera and Puertollano (Ciudad Real) (we reported) .

The two companies had already announced in July 2020 that they would invest 150 million euros in Puertollano. The project there consists of a 100 megawatt photovoltaic system and a lithium-ion battery system with a storage capacity of 20 megawatt hours. There is also electrolysis with an output of 20 megawatts. Development and construction will create 700 jobs. Hydrogen production with green electricity is scheduled to begin there next year. Here too, NEL will supply the electrolysis technology.
