(Rochester, NY/USA) – Hyzon Motors Inc., a US provider of hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles, will deliver around 2026 trucks to the New Zealand company Hiringa Energy by 1.500. According to the information, the first batch is expected to go into operation by the end of 2021.

The 58-ton trucks travel 680 kilometers on one tank of fuel. They can also be optionally equipped with sleeping cabins. According to Hyzon, the trucks would be a “drop-in” solution for freight companies to gradually replace diesel fleets. The purchase price was not disclosed.

Craig Knight, Chief Executive Officer of Hyzon Motors, sees the hydrogen supply network designed by Hiringa as “key to delivering our decarbonization strategy”. Headquartered in Rochester, New York, Hyzon has offices in Europe, Singapore, Australia and China.

Produced in the Netherlands

According to Hyzon Motors Europe, the one and a half thousand vehicles will be built in a truck factory in Winschoten in the Dutch province of Groningen and then shipped to New Zealand. Hyzon Motors Europe BV is a cooperation between the Groningen company Holthausen Clean Technology from Hoogezand and the American parent company Hyzon Motors.

Hyzon supplies trucks, Hiringa builds hydrogen filling stations

The contract signing follows a joint agreement in August 2020 for Hiringa to decarbonise New Zealand's heavy transport sector through the use of heavy fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). Hiringa – the Maori word means “perseverance” or “determination”, but also “inspiration” and “vitality” – will build a network of filling stations with green hydrogen. The first stations will go into operation this year, and by 2022 there will be a total of eight stations to serve the island state's heavy-duty routes.

Merger with “Decarbonization Plus Acquisition”

Just a few days ago, Hyzon Motors announced its merger with the Californian “Decarbonization Plus Acquisition Corporation” (DCRB). The Company is a company formed specifically for the purpose of carrying out mergers, acquisitions of assets or restructuring and mergers with one or more companies. Behind it is New York-based Riverstone Holdings LLC, a private investment company focused on energy and power with assets under management of more than $41 billion.

The combined company will be listed on the US technology exchange Nasdaq. Proceeds from the transaction are forecast at $626 million, including $400 million from existing and new investors and funds managed by Blackrock, Federated Hermes Kaufmann Funds, Fidelity Management & Research Company LLC, Wellington Management and Riverstone Energy Limited.

Hyzon's leadership remains unchanged. Craig Knight continues as Chief Executive Officer and oversees strategic growth initiatives and expansions. The board will consist of representatives from Hyzon and DCRB. The transaction was unanimously approved by the boards of Hyzon and DCRB. Completion will take place in the second calendar quarter of 2021.
