(Gothenburg, Sweden) – The Norwegian hydrogen company Hydrogen Solutions AS (HYDS) plans to build an electrolysis plant in the port of Gothenburg to produce green hydrogen. According to the company, the plant will have a capacity of five to ten megawatts, resulting in a daily production of two to four tons, equivalent to the energy content of approximately 20.000 liters of diesel. Commissioning is planned for 2029. The final investment decision is expected in the first half of 2027, says HYDS CEO Frode Kirkedam.

Construction has already been approved.

HYDS is taking over the project from the Norwegian energy company Statkraft, which reached an agreement with the port authority in 2021 to explore the conditions for hydrogen production in the port area. The permitting process for the construction of the electrolyzer has now been completed, and HYDS has also acquired the lease agreement, the environmental permit for the plant, and the external financing agreements from the project company Statkraft Hydrogen Göteborg AB.

Klimatklivet, an initiative of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, is supporting the project with 37,4 million kronor (3,53 million euros). According to HYDS, the funds will remain in the project after the transfer to the new owner. The companies did not disclose the terms of the agreement.

Transition to fossil-free fuels

Gothenburg is systematically working to build an infrastructure that provides "multiple fossil-free fuels for different transport needs." "The production of green hydrogen creates the conditions for the transition to multiple modes of transport in and around the port," says Viktor Allgurén, Head of Innovation at the Port of Gothenburg.

Within the port area, the hydrogen company Hydri already operates a public hydrogen refueling station for vehicles and machinery. As the plans for the electrolyzer progress, the port will have a complete hydrogen infrastructure – from production and distribution to end-use.

Last spring, Statkraft decided to withdraw from the hydrogen business in all markets and concentrate on core businesses such as hydropower, wind power, and solar energy. "The sale of the hydrogen project in the Port of Gothenburg is in line with our updated strategy," says Jakob Norström, CEO of Statkraft Sweden.
