(Sandnes, Norway) – Hy2gen Nordic AS can begin construction of its "Iverson" ammonia project at the Birkeland industrial site. The Sauda municipal council has approved the project and granted the necessary permits, announced the subsidiary of the German renewable hydrogen producer Hy2gen AG.

The plant, being built in cooperation with investor Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), was announced back in 2022. It is based on hydrogen, which will be produced using hydroelectric power in a 270-megawatt electrolyzer. Ammonia production is projected at 200.000 tons annually. The project is expected to create 300 jobs in the construction sector, 50 to 60 permanent positions, and hundreds of indirect jobs.

Investment decision still missing

"This is a decisive step forward and the beginning of a new industrial chapter in Sauda," says Hege Økland, Managing Director of Hy2gen Nordic AS and Iverson eFuels AS. "We look forward to constructive dialogue and close cooperation with local companies and the municipality." They will now proceed with the technical development and then make a final investment decision.

Hy2gen AG, based in Wiesbaden, develops, finances, builds, and operates plants worldwide for the production of renewable hydrogen, ammonia, and its derivatives (RFNBO, Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) such as eSAF, eMethane, and eMethanol using the Power-to-X process. Customers include companies from difficult-to-decarbonize sectors such as shipping, aviation, and the chemical, fertilizer, and steel industries. The company says it is active in five countries. The current project pipeline includes 3,4 gigawatts of electrolysis capacity under planning and construction, with a further 15 gigawatts of electrolysis capacity under development.

Financing round with 47 million euros

In April, Hy2gen secured €47 million in a financing round from existing shareholders. Investors include the French low-carbon hydrogen asset manager Hy24 through its Clean Hydrogen Infrastructure Fund, the French engineering and technology company Technip Energies, and founding investor BenDa Sàrl, the Luxembourg family fund of Hy2gen's chairwoman, Dana Kallasch.

Hy2gen's portfolio includes the 300-megawatt "Courant" project in Canada, a renewable ammonia and ammonium nitrate plant with an investment volume of approximately two billion euros, whose construction is expected to begin by 2027; and the "Atlantis" plant in Werlte, Lower Saxony, which has been producing renewable hydrogen for the production of eMethane since 2023 and will be expanded by the end of this year. Furthermore, Hy2gen is collaborating with H2V in Fos-Marseille, France, on a 390-megawatt project with an investment volume of approximately 1,5 billion euros. Three electrolyzers for the production of eMethane and eSAF are planned there.
