(Vancouver, Canada) – Canadian hydrogen refueling station operator HTEC has received 337 million Canadian dollars (228 million euros) in funding from Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB). HTEC plans to use the funds to implement a sustainable fuel supply chain in the provinces of British Columbia and Alberta, called the "H2 Gateway."

20 hydrogen filling stations planned

The company says it plans to build and operate 20 hydrogen refueling stations, 14 of which will be suitable for heavy-duty vehicles. The stations will be supplied by three new production plants in Burnaby, Nanaimo and Prince George, as well as a plant in North Vancouver that produces 15 tonnes of liquid hydrogen per day as a byproduct. It is estimated that the project would create more than 280 full-time jobs.

"H2 Gateway," a $900 million program, focuses primarily on building hydrogen transportation systems. The funding would help accelerate the implementation of hydrogen technology, the company said. The new pace is intended to overcome the obstacles that still exist to private investment in fuel production and infrastructure.

The partnership is the third investment through the CIB's Charging and Hydrogen Refuelling Infrastructure (CHRI) initiative. HTEC had previously received five million dollars (3,3 million euros) from the government financing institution Pacific Economic Development Canada through the Business Scale-up program, as well as three million dollars (2,1 million euros) from the Department of Energy's Zero Emissions Vehicle Infrastructure Program to finance low-carbon hydrogen production in Burnaby, British Columbia.

"By investing in hydrogen production, distribution and refueling infrastructure, we are accelerating the deployment of this sustainable fuel solution," says Ehren Cory, CEO of Canada Infrastructure Bank. The plan is now to implement "H2 Gateway," confirms HTEC Managing Director Colin Armstrong. The company designs, builds, owns and operates infrastructure facilities for the production of hydrogen in order to advance its use in the transport sector.
