(Copenhagen/Western Australia) – Hydrogen Renewables Australia (HRA) Pty Ltd and Danish fund manager Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) have announced their collaboration on the Murchison Renewable Hydrogen project. HRA wants to build solar and wind power plants with an output of five gigawatts. The electricity will be used to produce green hydrogen. The water required for electrolysis is obtained using a seawater desalination plant. Location is near Kalbarri in the Australian state of Western Australia.

We are currently working on a feasibility study. 2.000 to 3.000 jobs could be created during the construction of the facilities, and 250 to 300 permanent jobs are planned for operation and maintenance. HRA has already signed a letter of intent with Siemens to collaborate on electrolyzer technology.

Transport, feed-in and Asian export

The project will be developed in three phases. Initially, hydrogen will be produced for the transport sector. It will then be examined whether and how it is possible to feed into the nearby Dampier-Bunbury natural gas pipeline. This is more than 1.500 kilometers long and has a pipe diameter of 6,5 meters. It is both the longest gas pipeline on the continent and one of the longest in the world and is operated by the Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG). HRA had already reached an agreement with the company in May 2020 to examine the injection of hydrogen and thus obtain a storage medium. AGIG says it already has several hydrogen projects planned in four states.

In the third phase, the hydrogen will finally be exported to the Asian markets, particularly Japan and Korea. The new partnership with CIP will enable the Murchison Renewable Hydrogen Project to be further developed and hydrogen export opportunities analyzed, said HRA Executive Chairman Terry Kallis.

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners specializes in renewable energy infrastructure and manages assets worth more than twelve billion euros.
