(Jyväskylä / Finland) – The Central Finland Mobility Foundation (Cefmof) has initiated the “Hydrogen Sauna Boat” project. The aim is to test the use of hydrogen for recreational watercraft and to raise awareness of hydrogen's potential as part of future energy systems.

The project involves converting hydrogen – stored in replaceable cartridges – into electricity using fuel cells to power the sauna boat and supply the onboard equipment and batteries. The energy carrier will also be used as a direct source for heating the sauna. The vessel will serve as a practical platform for testing hydrogen applications under real-world operating conditions.
“The goal is to gather practical experience and demonstrate that hydrogen can also be used in locations where no conventional refueling infrastructure exists,” says Shun Kanazawa, Program Assistant for Innovation and R&D Acceleration at Cefmof. “At the same time, we are exploring new applications and supporting the development of the hydrogen economy in Finland.”

Particular attention is paid to the safe use of hydrogen. The energy system is designed to minimize potential risks through technical measures. Consumption is automatically monitored via hydrogen detection systems and integrated safety functions. Any abnormal conditions are detected in real time, allowing the system to automatically interrupt the supply if necessary. Furthermore, structural solutions and effective ventilation prevent hydrogen from accumulating in enclosed spaces.
The hydrogen-powered sauna boat is currently under construction. Initial water tests are planned for July. The vessel will be presented in the port of Jyväskylä during its commissioning phase. Cefmof had already presented a trailer-mounted sauna in Jyväskylä in the summer of 2025.
Cefmof is a foundation established by the city of Jyväskylä, the Toyota Racing World Rally Team, and the Toyota Mobility Foundation. The company aims to promote the development of hydrogen applications and, in particular, to support hydrogen mobility through practical measures.
