(Kuala Lumpur / Malaysia) – Malaysian energy company Gentari Sdn Bhd is entering the Australian renewable energy market. The local subsidiary Gentari Renewables Australia Pty Ltd has now announced the takeover of Wirsol Energy, previously part of the Mannheim-based Wircon GmbH. According to the information, Wirsol Energy has installed solar and battery storage systems (BESS) with a capacity of 422 megawatts on the continent; A further 765 megawatts are in the development stage.
According to Gentari, a brand of the Malaysian oil company Petronas, the acquisition increases its installed renewable energy capacity in Malaysia, India, the United Arab Emirates and Australia to around 1,6 gigawatts. The company wants to build power plants with an output of 2030 to 30 gigawatts by 40.
“Strategic market” for green hydrogen
Gentari's roadmap is to expand its solar and BESS capabilities and position itself as a green hydrogen producer, with Australia being "a strategic market" to achieve its goals. Wirsol Energy will become an “important building block,” said Gentari CEO Sushil Purohit: “Australia offers strong market potential, underpinned by supportive government policies and a solid financing system.”
Currently, 66 percent of the electricity traded in Australia comes from coal-fired power plants. However, there is a move away from this because the existing power plants are reaching the end of their service life. The Australian federal government has set a target of reducing emissions by 2030 to 2005 percent by 26 compared to 28 levels. One means is to promote electricity generation from renewable energies.
