(Phoenix / USA) – The US Nikola Corporation from Phoenix, Arizona, and the Australian Fortescue Future Industries Pty Ltd (FFI) want to jointly develop “large-scale green hydrogen production facilities in the USA”. Nikola, a truck builder and infrastructure company, says it has “great need for green hydrogen to decarbonize the transportation sector and other industries.”

As part of an agreement now reached, Nikola will also examine the possibilities of purchasing green hydrogen from other projects pursued by FFI, as well as the joint development of new projects for the production of green hydrogen and the associated infrastructure.

Fortescue's plans

“This new partnership underlines FFI’s commitment to helping to decarbonise the transport sector,” said FFI Managing Director Mark Hutchinson. The laws passed by the US Congress to promote projects to reduce greenhouse gases – such as the “Inflation Reduction Act” signed by US President Biden in August 2022 – made the USA “one of the best places in the world to invest in green energy invest and create new jobs.”

FFI operates in more than 25 countries and is a subsidiary of Fortescue Metals Group Ltd. mining magnate Andrew Forrest, who has increasingly focused on environmentally friendly energy sources in recent years. For example, last November FFI announced a collaboration with the Australian project developer Windlab Pty. Ltd. Accordingly, they want to work together on a “super hub” in the state Queensland Wind and solar power plants with an output of more than ten gigawatts will be built. The proceeds are used, among other things, to produce green hydrogen.

A few weeks earlier they had Deutsche Bahn AG and Fortescue Future Industries declared their cooperation in researching green hydrogen and ammonia fuels for rail transport as a diesel replacement. Andrew Forest also invests in, among other things Wilhelmshaven, New Zealand, India and Brazil.
