(Berlin, Germany) – German companies can once again receive funding for international hydrogen projects. The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) has now published the funding guidelines. Project proposals can be submitted until December 17, 2026 .

Strengthening German technologies abroad

The aim is to "strengthen the use of German hydrogen technologies in industrial production facilities abroad and to prepare new markets and import routes for hydrogen products," the document states. Funding for project-related feasibility studies will also remain part of the instrument. Companies could receive up to €30 million per project for the years 2027 to 2030. A prerequisite is that the project is implemented outside the European Economic Area and Switzerland and ensures significant German and European added value.

2-stage application process

The application process is two-stage: In the first stage, companies submit their project outlines. For projects prioritized by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), funding applications can be submitted in a second stage. Grant awards are expected to be issued in the second half of 2027. However, the allocated funds are still subject to the adoption of the 2027 budget.

The second call for proposals was issued a year ago, in October 2025. In the projects funded so far, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), together with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), is supporting the testing of German technologies in Chile, Namibia, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, and Serbia. Further project funding will soon begin in Southern Africa, the MENA region, Asia, South America, and Australia, supporting the production of renewable hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, renewable aviation fuels, and green iron. The majority of the funding goes to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

On October 15, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., there will be a digital information event about the funding opportunities and the procedure (with registration).
