(Munich/Friedrichshafen) – Flixmobility GmbH is participating in the “HyFleet” research project together with Freudenberg Fuel Cell e-Power Systems GmbH and the automotive supplier ZF Friedrichshafen AG. The focus is on the development of a high-performance fuel cell system for long-distance buses. The non-profit climate protection organization Atmosfair is also involved, as is an unnamed European bus manufacturer as the project progresses.
Flixmobility wants to test and introduce fuel cell-powered buses in European long-distance transport by 2024. The project has already been promised non-binding financing by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure.
In the first phase, Freudenberg is developing a fuel cell system that will be tested in a demonstration bus. The goal is a range of at least 500 kilometers with a refueling time that corresponds to that of a diesel bus. Flixmobility plans to use only green hydrogen for operations. To achieve this, the company works with infrastructure and energy providers.
According to its own information, the company already has biogas-powered long-distance buses, electric buses in France and Germany, and a long-distance bus equipped with solar cells in operation.
