(Osterholz-Scharnbeck / Iserlohn) – Faun Umwelttechnik GmbH & Co. KG, which specializes in municipal garbage trucks and sweepers, will in future offer trucks powered by hydrogen as standard under a new brand “Enginius”. The development was (as reported) announced in April. “With Enginius, we want to become the European market leader for hydrogen-powered trucks on short and medium-haul routes by 2030,” says Faun managing director Patrick Hermanspann. Hydrogen-powered waste collection vehicles are already on the road in cities such as Berlin, Duisburg, Bochum and Brussels.

Bluepower for municipal vehicles

The new subsidiary Enginius GmbH, based in Iserlohn, uses two chassis from Daimler Trucks, which are equipped with high-pressure tanks for hydrogen, fuel cells and buffer batteries in Faun's Bremen production halls. Based on the Econic chassis, Enginius builds the three-axle “Bluepower” truck for applications in municipalities as a carrier vehicle for garbage collection or sweeper bodies, but also refrigerated vehicles. The tank volume is 16 kilograms (refueling time 15 minutes), the fuel cell output is 90 kilowatts and the battery capacity is 85 kilowatt hours. According to the data sheet, the maximum power of the electric motor is 240 kilowatts and the range is around 240 kilometers. The company wants to build 1.000 of these vehicles every year.

City power for the transport of goods and goods

Based on the two-axle Atego substructure, the “Citypower” type for inner-city goods and goods transport will be added in 2023. Possible options include a box or flatbed body, tipper, but also the concept as a refrigerated vehicle.

This model has a tank volume of 32 kilograms and the refueling time is half an hour. The battery has a capacity of 85 kilowatt hours, the payload is a good nine tons and the range with hydrogen is around 500 kilometers. Patrick Hermanspann sees “immense potential” for Citypower in particular. Production capacities at the Bremen site will therefore be gradually expanded. The production volume is estimated at 4.000 pieces annually.

Faun employs more than 2.000 people worldwide - 60 of them in Bremen - and operates twelve plants in seven countries. The headquarters is in Osterholz-Scharmbeck (Lower Saxony). Faun is part of Kirchhoff Ecotec, the environmental division of the global Kirchhoff Group. According to its own information, the group of companies generated sales of 2021 billion euros in 12.200 with 2,2 employees in the four business areas of automotive, tools, vehicle conversions and municipal technology. The group has 56 plants in 22 countries on five continents.
