(Mérida / Spain) – The autonomous community of Extremadura wants to produce around 2030 percent of the green hydrogen produced in Spain by 20. To this end, electrolyzers with a cumulative output of three gigawatts are to be installed in the region, said Guillermo Fernández Vara, President of the regional government, yesterday (Tuesday 17). In this way, we will become “the main location for hydrogen production in the country,” as is already the case with photovoltaics. The central government in Madrid plans to build electrolyzers with a total output of 16 gigawatts throughout the country.
Cooperation with Enagás
To accelerate his plan, Fernández Vara signed a cooperation agreement with the president of gas network operator Enagás, Arturo Gonzalez Aizpiri, to develop transport, storage and storage infrastructure for renewable hydrogen and its derivatives in Extremadura. The region has the potential to become a “big hydrogen hub” in our country, emphasized Aizpiri.

According to the information, the investment requirement is around ten billion euros, which would create around 2.500 direct jobs and a further 20.000 jobs during the construction of the facilities. A total of around 420 kilometers of hydrogen pipelines are required. This means that 13,8 percent of the entire national green hydrogen network would ultimately be in Extremadura.
Training of specialists
According to the head of government, preparations are already underway. Together with Enagás and the EOI (Escuela de Organizacion Industrial) in Madrid, which is part of the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, a training program with a focus on “renewable gases” will be developed in Extremadura “later this year” in order to provide, if necessary To be able to rely on skilled workers.
According to Enagás, the regional government of Extremadura recently passed a decree declaring the production of green hydrogen in the region a “topic of general interest”.
