(Herning / Denmark) – The Danish company Everfuel A/S is planning to build a new hydrogen center in Holstebro in Jutland, about half an hour's drive from the company's headquarters in Herning. According to the company involved in hydrogen production, distribution and refueling, the potential for the use of green hydrogen in industrial processes and mobility is being examined together with the city administration.

Hydrogen use in the community

The project is being developed in several phases. This will allow the municipality to significantly reduce its CO2 emissions and use hydrogen for a large part of its activities, says Jacob Krogsgaard, CEO of Everfuel. Holstebro ranks second in Denmark in the use of onshore wind and solar energy.

In the first phase, the community and industry are researching the production of e-methane and the use of hydrogen in existing natural gas pipelines. In phase two, Everfuel plans to build a 100 megawatt electrolyzer, a hydrogen terminal, a distribution center and a hydrogen filling station for heavy-duty vehicles and cars. Implementation depends, among other things, on the construction of renewable energy systems near the PtX system and a stable power supply.

The green hydrogen will then replace fossil fuels such as natural gas “in selected industrial processes”. The excess heat from hydrogen production should be passed on to the local district heating operator MEC (Maabjerg Energy Center). This makes the PtX process more efficient. “We are also looking at other synergies, for example by adding hydrogen to a biogas plant, which could increase production,” says MEC board member Pernille Bloch. This could be “one of the solutions for Europe to become independent of Russian gas”.

Construction starts in 2025

An important buyer of green hydrogen is the Swedish-Danish dairy cooperative Arla Foods. The company wants to replace natural gas with hydrogen in its processes and thereby significantly reduce its CO2 emissions. The goal is a reduction of 63 percent by 2030, explained David Boulanger, Executive Vice President at Arla Foods.

According to Everfuel, the location for the electrolysis has already been secured. Construction should begin in 2025.
