(Copenhagen, Denmark) – European Energy A/S has commenced hydrogen production at its Måde plant, increasing electrolysis capacity from 3,1 megawatts to 8,1 megawatts. Along with the installation of a new unit from Plug Power Inc., the original electrolyzer from the technology company Stiesdal A/S, dating back to 2024, has been replaced with a new and upgraded unit. The upgrade is designed to bring the plant up to current technical standards and ensure reliable operations as production scales up over time. European Energy plans to test various electrolyzers to evaluate their commercial performance.

Hydrogen EU-compliant

In addition to the technical commissioning process, European Energy has completed the necessary audits to obtain ISO 9001 certification for operating as a gas distribution company in Denmark. This certification is part of the regulatory framework governing the supply of hydrogen to end users. The hydrogen produced at the plant is certified in accordance with EU regulations as "RFNBO" (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin).

“The expansion of electrolysis capacity in Måde is an important step in the further development of our work with Power-to-X,” says Lars Dyrholm, Director and Head of PtX Asset Management & Operations at European Energy. “The new unit enables us to test the system performance under operating conditions and to develop commercially viable hydrogen production based on current technical standards.”

Over the next three to four weeks, system and performance optimizations will be carried out to further harmonize equipment, control systems, and safety processes. According to European Energy, the yield will be approximately 550 tons of green hydrogen annually, which corresponds to about 1.500 truckloads in 2026.
