(Berlin) - The funding guidelines for commercial vehicles with alternative drives can start after approval by the European Commission. Funding opportunities are available for battery, fuel cell and hybrid electric vehicles, corresponding fueling and charging infrastructure as well as feasibility studies.

Specifically, the directive includes three elements: (1) Promotion of the purchase of new climate-friendly commercial vehicles (EC vehicle classes N1, N2, N3) as well as commercial vehicles converted to alternative drives (EC vehicle classes N2, N3) in the amount of 80 percent of the additional investment expenditure in comparison to a conventional diesel vehicle; (2) Funding of the refueling and charging infrastructure required for the operation of climate-friendly commercial vehicles amounting to 80 percent of the total project-related expenditure eligible for funding; (3) Funding the preparation of feasibility studies on the possible uses of climate-friendly commercial vehicles as well as the construction/expansion of corresponding infrastructure in the amount of 50 percent of the eligible expenditure.

Details of the funding, the text of the guidelines and the first call for funding will be published “shortly”. By 2024, the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMVI) will provide a total of around 1,6 billion euros to support the purchase of climate-friendly commercial vehicles and five billion euros to develop the refueling and charging infrastructure (cars and trucks).
