Paris/Issy-les-Moulineaux. French energy supplier Engie and Ariane Group have announced a cooperation agreement in the field of renewable liquid hydrogen. The aim is to accelerate the decarbonization of heavy-duty and long-haul transport, for example in maritime and rail transport as well as in aerospace.
To this end, the companies want to use their expertise and technologies together to develop, test and optimize a hydrogen liquefier at the Ariane Group's industrial plant in Vernon (France). Furthermore, should
“a range of products and services will be developed on the liquid hydrogen line”, mainly for maritime and inland waterway applications. No details were given.
Ariane Group is a joint venture between the European aerospace company Airbus Group and the French technology and defense group Safran SA. It develops liquid hydrogen-based propulsion systems and associated ground facilities. The Ariane Group operates the largest hydrogen testing center in Europe at its Vernon site. According to managing director André-Hubert Roussel, the Ariane Group is “one of the few companies in the world that has in-depth know-how in systems and solutions based on liquid hydrogen” due to its rocket engine technology.
Engie, on the other hand, brings its expertise in the field of liquid gases to the R&D program. The energy supplier says it is already working with mining company Anglo American to develop the first hydrogen-powered mining truck. Engie also fueled Alstom's Coradia iLint regional passenger train with renewable hydrogen during tests in the Netherlands.
