(Rotterdam / Netherlands) – The Netherlands-based energy supplier Eneco has submitted a planning application for an electrolyser in Rotterdam's Europoort industrial area. The company is working with Mitsubishi as part of the Eneco Diamond Hydrogen joint venture.
“The production of green hydrogen is essential for a successful energy transition,” said Eneco managing director As Tempelman. The investment is “an important part” of the company’s strategy. The electrolyser will be operated with solar and wind power; the energy source is initially intended for the industrial sector.

The plant will be built in the immediate vicinity of the “Enecogen” gas power plant. This means that parts of the infrastructure can be used together, which brings advantages in terms of costs and construction time. The capacity of the electrolyzer is estimated at 800 megawatts. This means that up to 80.000 tonnes of hydrogen could be produced per year, “depending on the amount of renewable energy available and demand”. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026 and commissioning is planned for 2029.
The supplier took over the German green electricity provider Lichtblick in 2018. Since 2019, Eneco has belonged to a consortium made up of Mitsubishi Corporation and Chubu Electric Power.
