(Saerbeck) – Enapter AG has made construction progress and published details of the new production facility for electrolysers in Saerbeck, North Rhine-Westphalia, 30 kilometers north of Münster. The Enapter Campus is being built on an 82.000 square meter site with production, research and development as well as administration. The groundbreaking ceremony took place as reported, in September last year.

Avoiding gray energy

The company wants to operate the entire campus with renewable energy, either produced on site or sourced from the nearby Saerbeck bioenergy park. According to a statement, the aim is to “get by completely without gray energy”. Around 60 percent of the electricity required for electrolyzer production is expected to be covered by a photovoltaic system on the roofs of the buildings with an output of around 2,3 megawatts. Their annual yield is forecast at 2.100 megawatt hours. A spokesman for the company said in response to an editorial query that the details were still being worked on.

In addition, Enapter will use a direct connection to the Saerbeck Bioenergy Park, which was founded as part of a citizens' initiative. The yield from the wind turbines, solar systems and a biogas plant is twice as high as the municipality of Saerbeck itself needs.

The previously unused waste heat from the biogas plant is intended to support hot water treatment and heating of the buildings on the Enapter campus. In addition, electrolysers would produce green hydrogen for a combined heat and power plant. The electricity generated can operate heat pumps or ensure emergency power supply.

As announced, the start of production is still planned for the end of 2022. Once the facilities are fully ramped up, the production capacity will be more than 10.000 devices per month.
