Berlin - Enapter is building a production facility for AEM electrolyzers (Anion Exchange Membrane) in Saerbeck, North Rhine-Westphalia. At the Enapter Campus of the climate community, “modular systems for the production of green hydrogen are being manufactured and further developed in large quantities,” according to the company.
The planned factory in Münsterland will produce more than 100.000 electrolyzer units per year, creating up to 300 jobs. The company premises are operated entirely with renewable energies from Saerbeck's solar, wind and biomass systems as well as from our own solar systems and hydrogen storage. Construction will begin on the 76.000 square meter site, 30 kilometers north of Münster, in early 2021. Production is scheduled to start in 2022.
For Enapter, automated mass production is the central prerequisite for making green hydrogen economically competitive with fossil fuels and providing it in the quantities required worldwide. In addition, the production and operation of the campus will be sustainable, “with various zero-waste approaches and a facility specifically for the recycling of used electrolysers.” The series production that currently exists in Pisa, Italy, will continue to be expanded and supplement production capacities.
Saerbeck's mayor Wilfried Roos was particularly impressed by the plans "because we are a climate community and share with Enapter the idea of a fair energy system of the future: regional value creation, climate and energy policy as a citizens' movement and comprehensive consideration of the needs of people and nature." it in a message.
Saerbeck won the “NRW Climate Municipality of the Future” competition in 2009. The community wants to be climate neutral by 2030. A bioenergy park was developed from a former ammunition depot, producing enough energy from wind, sun and biomass to cover Saerbeck's needs more than twice. In the fall, the state government wants to present a roadmap to further advance hydrogen technology together with business.
According to Sebastian-Justus Schmidt, chairman and co-founder of Enapter, Saerbeck was also chosen because the community, which has around 7.000 inhabitants, has shaped successful climate and energy policy as a citizens' movement for many years. Enapter has offices in Italy, Germany, Thailand and Russia.
