(Madrid / Spain) – Hydrogen will be produced in the northern Spanish municipality of La Robla in the province of Castile and León from 2026. The production capacity is 280 megawatts, according to a statement. The investments are estimated at 485 million euros.

The initiators are Enagás Renovable, the renewable energy subsidiary of the Spanish gas network operator Enagás SA, and Naturgy Energy Group SA, one of the country's largest electricity and gas suppliers. Naturgy had previously operated a 50 megawatt coal-fired power plant at the planned site for around 655 years, which has been dismantled since 2020.

Interest in the industry

An electrolysis capacity of 60 megawatts was originally planned. But due to industry interest in the former mining town and the proximity to a future hydrogen pipeline, the plans were expanded to 280 megawatts, Enagás explained. Because of the economies of scale, the production costs for green hydrogen are falling. In addition, the competitive advantages of the companies that purchase the gas increased.

A joint venture called “Robla Hub” was founded specifically to implement the project. This will also develop several photovoltaic systems in neighboring communities, the electricity from which will enable the production of green hydrogen. The future installed capacity is stated to be a cumulative 450 megawatts.
