(Leipzig/Helsinki) – The Finnish subsidiary of the Leipzig energy exchange EEX, Grexel Systems Oy, based in Helsinki, has been appointed operator of the first European register of guarantees of origin (GO) for green hydrogen. Grexel is a provider of energy certificate registries in Europe and supports its customers in designing new certification systems and in dealing with changing requirements imposed by international laws and standards, EEX said.
The Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH2 JU) association is financing the project. The organization is a PPP, a “public private partnership”, between the European Commission, European industry, represented by “Hydrogen Europe”, and research institutions that have come together under the name “Hydrogen Europe Research”. The task is to support research, technological development and demonstration in the field of fuel cell and hydrogen technologies in Europe with the aim of accelerating their market launch.
CertifHy certifies the origin of hydrogen
The “CertifHy” project was launched back in 2014 on behalf of the EU Commission. The strategy consulting company Hinicio from Belgium, which specializes in sustainable energy and mobility, leads the consortium, which consists of six players: Hinicio, Grexel, Ludwig-Bölkow-Systemtechnik, Tüv Süd, the Association of Issuing Bodies in Europe and the French research center Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA).
With a certificate of origin from CertifHy, end users can prove that hydrogen was produced using renewable or low-carbon energy sources, according to Tüv Süd. The system includes two types of guarantees of origin: CertifHy “Green Hydrogen” for hydrogen produced with the help of renewable energies (bioenergy, water, wind and solar energy) (green hydrogen) and CertifHy “Low Carbon Hydrogen”, produced with low emissions conventional energy (“low-CO2 hydrogen”).
