(London/Great Britain) – EDF Renewables UK and Hynamics, a hydrogen-focused subsidiary of the EDF Group, announce major investments in Teesside, UK. Accordingly, a center for the production of green hydrogen is to be built in the Tees Valley in northeast England near the former Redcar steelworks. In the initial phase, an electrolyser with an output of 30 to 50 megawatts is planned, which could be expanded to over 500 megawatts, the companies said.
Wind power and solar park for green hydrogen
The project, called “Tees Green Hydrogen”, will use green electricity from the nearby Teesside offshore wind farm, which has existed since 2014, together with the output from a new 49,9 megawatt solar farm that EDF Renewables wants to build near Redcar used to operate the hydrogen electrolyzer. Once the systems are completed, local customers in the conurbation around the cities of Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees, Redcar and Billingham would be supplied with the energy source.
However, detailed plans for “Tees Green Hydrogen” will only be published “later this year”. However, a consultation on the construction of the solar farm on the River Tees will take place later this month.
Decarbonize port operations
The solar and hydrogen initiative will complement EDF's presence in Teesside, the company said. In addition to the wind farm, this also includes the 40-year-old nuclear power plant in Hartlepool.
In addition to EDF, the initiators of the project are the regional development company Teesworks, chaired by Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen, as well as British Steel Lackenby Works, part of the Chinese steel manufacturer Jingye Group since 2020, and the port company PD Ports. Their port in Tees Valley is the fifth largest in Great Britain. The aim is to use the hydrogen from the new project to decarbonize the port and “further investigate the decarbonization of maritime transport on a larger scale,” it says vaguely.
