(Berlin) - The German Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (DWV) launched the “HySteel” project. According to the information, the aim is to set up an “innovation platform to build a hydrogen economy in Germany” in order to advance the production of green steel.

According to DWV board chairman Werner Diwald, the association wants to create the conditions for a green hydrogen economy with the “network for the exchange of knowledge and experience between steel companies, electrolysis operators, providers of renewable electricity and network operators as well as research institutions”. “In this way, the use and further development of technologies for low-emission steel production based on renewable hydrogen should also be supported and introduced into the market.”

The innovation cluster's project work will begin at the end of 2020 and is initially designed to last three years. The Federal Environment Ministry (BMU) is supporting the project with over 400.000 euros. Renewable hydrogen plays a major role in moving steel production away from coking coal and towards climate-neutral production, explained BMU State Secretary Jochen Flasbarth. The funds come from the “Decarbonization in Industry” funding program.
