(Berlin, Germany) – Germany will support Algeria in developing a hydrogen infrastructure. Furthermore, both countries intend to strengthen their cooperation in the production of green hydrogen and install a hydrogen pilot plant. To this end, a bilateral hydrogen task force will be established within the framework of the energy partnership. This task force will promote the framework conditions for the production, storage, and transport of green hydrogen and its derivatives, and support private sector investment in both countries. A corresponding declaration of intent was signed by German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Robert Habeck and the Algerian Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, at a meeting in Algiers.
Know-how and expertise from Germany
Germany and the EU are “available as potential buyer countries for green hydrogen,” said Habeck. “Now it’s about creating the necessary technical and economic conditions for hydrogen deliveries between Algeria and Europe.” The country is being supported with know-how and technical expertise.

As part of the Algerian-German energy partnership, a roundtable with business representatives and experts took place on the potential and challenges of expanding renewable energies, hydrogen, financing, transport and acceptance. Representatives of the European Commission, Italy, Austria and Tunisia were also invited, who together support the creation of a “SoutH2 Corridor”. This envisages the conversion and expansion of the existing gas pipeline corridor for renewable hydrogen, from Algeria via Tunisia, Italy and Austria to southern Germany. Algeria wants to export ten percent of the EU's needs by 2040.
Four European gas transmission and infrastructure operators joined forces in 2022 to develop a hydrogen-compatible pipeline network connecting North Africa with Central Europe. The Italian company Società Nazionale Metanodotti SpA (Snam), the two Austrian companies Trans Austria Gasleitung GmbH (TAG) and Gas Connect Austria GmbH (GCA), and the German company Bayernets GmbH are involved in the project.
