(Berlin) - The governments of Germany and Egypt intend to cooperate more closely in developing climate-neutral energy supplies. Accordingly, Germany is supporting Egypt in building a sustainable green hydrogen value chain and wants to intensify trade in liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Before the World Climate Conference (COP), which will take place from November 6th to 18th in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, we are sending “a clear signal,” said Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) Robert Habeck: “We are supporting Egypt in achieving this “to put our own energy supply on a new footing and to accelerate the switch from fossil to climate-friendly energies.” The global energy transition and the cross-border, climate-neutral energy networks to be established are “essentially based on green hydrogen”.
German technology for Egypt
Specific priorities include promoting the mutual exchange of knowledge and technological know-how as well as the use of German technology in Egypt with a focus on green hydrogen, as well as projects related to the production, processing, use and transport of green hydrogen and the promotion of the Building a green hydrogen sector.
A second statement stated that cooperation between governments and companies from both countries in energy trading, especially in the supply of liquid gas to Germany, should be improved. This will help the Federal Republic to “further diversify energy imports and become more independent of Russian gas”.
The agreement was signed during a virtual meeting between Habeck and Jochen Flasbarth, State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, on the one hand, as well as Tarek El Molla, Minister for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, and Mohamed Shaker El-Markabi, Minister for Electricity and Renewable Energy , as well as Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of International Cooperation, signed on the other side.
