Daimler Truck AG and the Volvo Group have signed a preliminary agreement to establish a joint venture. The aim is to “develop, produce and market fuel cell systems ready for series production for use in heavy commercial vehicles and other fields of application,” according to the company. Daimler will combine its current fuel cell activities in the joint venture. Daimler Truck AG and the Volvo Group are each investing EUR 600 million in the joint venture.
With effect from May 1, 2021, Karin Rådström was appointed board member of Daimler Truck AG. The Swedish native has been responsible for sales and marketing at Scania as a board member since 2019.
The common goal of both companies is to bring heavy fuel cell commercial vehicles onto the market in series production in the second half of the decade. Daimler Trucks is bundling all group-wide fuel cell activities in a new fuel cell unit. This includes the assignment of the activities of Mercedes-Benz Fuel Cell GmbH to Daimler Truck AG. The joint venture includes locations in Nabern, Germany (currently the headquarters of Mercedes-Benz Fuel Cell GmbH) as well as other production facilities in Germany and Canada. A final agreement is expected by Q3 and is expected to be completed before the end of 2020.
