(Stuttgart) – The further developed prototype of the hydrogen-based fuel cell truck “Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Truck” has received road approval in Germany. The testing on public roads is taking place, among other things, on the B462 near Rastatt, where the transport of goods by operating overhead line trucks is to be electrified as part of the “eWayBW” project. According to the company, comparative tests are also taking place between the purely battery-electric Mercedes-Benz eActros and the overhead line and fuel cell trucks of other vehicle manufacturers, such as the trucks from Scania. The eActros has been undergoing intensive practical testing at Logistik Schmitt in the Rastatt region since July 2019. Daimler Truck is not planning any overhead line trucks.
The vehicle, which was introduced last year, has been driving on closed Daimler test tracks since April. The truck, which in the series version is designed for a range of more than 1.000 kilometers without stopping to refuel, has already completed several thousand test kilometers. Also in April, Daimler Truck announced “customer testing from 2023”. The group wants to deliver the first fuel cell series vehicles in 2027. By 2039, the aim is to only offer new vehicles in Europe, Japan and North America that are CO2-neutral when driving (“tank-to-wheel”).
In a technology combination, the trucks can be battery-electric or hydrogen-based (“dual-track strategy”), depending on customer requirements. “The lighter the charge and the shorter the distance, the sooner the battery will be used. The heavier the load and the longer the distance, the more likely the fuel cell will be the method of choice,” says the company headquarters.
