(Chemnitz) – Business, research and the community have developed the concept for a “Hydrogen and Mobility Innovation Center” (HIC) in Chemnitz as the location of a national hydrogen center. The HIC is to be built on an area of 37.000 square meters on the technology campus. The Chemnitz University of Technology, the Fraunhofer Institutes IWU and ENAS as well as the VW, BMW and Porsche vehicle factories are in the immediate vicinity.
For new settlements, the city of Chemnitz is creating planning and building rights for expansion areas of up to ten hectares. The municipal energy supplier Eins Energie Sachsen GmbH & Co. KG ensures that the campus is supplied with electricity, heat and hydrogen. The HZwo e. V. leads the consortium and coordinates the application under the motto “#Ready4Hydrogen”.
Saxony's State Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor and Transport, Martin Dulig, emphasizes that they want to "build an efficient hydrogen economy along the entire value chain" by 2030. The goal is a functioning infrastructure. “A national center for hydrogen mobility in the heart of Saxony’s most important industrial region would be an environmentally friendly boom for our hydrogen strategy.”
The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) has launched a competition to set up a national hydrogen center. A mid-three-digit million amount is available for this from the National Hydrogen Strategy budget. The finalists in the location competition are Chemnitz, Duisburg and Pfeffenhausen, which prevailed against 15 applicants. All three locations are assessed by independent experts. The decision will be made at the end of August 2021.
