(Copenhagen / Denmark) – The US project developer Carbon Sink LLC and the Danish logistics group AP Moller-Maersk A/S have reached an agreement to produce green methanol for ship propulsion. The company joins the seven existing partners already working to secure green fuel for 19 dual-fuel container ships that Maersk has ordered.
Production capacity of 100.000 tons
According to the information, Carbon Sink will build the first plant in the United States alongside Red River Energy's existing bioethanol plant in Rosholt, South Dakota. The production capacity is around 100.000 tons per year. Commercial commissioning is scheduled for 2027. Maersk wants to purchase the entire quantity produced at the plant. Optionally, the construction of additional carbon sink systems at other locations is being considered.
To produce green methanol, Carbon Sink uses a technology that combines green hydrogen from the electrolysis of water with additional renewable electricity and biogenic CO2. The CO2 for the first project is waste from Red River Energy's bioethanol plant, whose emissions are converted into green methanol.
Methanol agreements with seven companies
Had in March Maersk Agreements announced with six companies: CIMC Enric Holdings Ltd. (China), European Energy A/S (Denmark), Green Technology Bank Co. Ltd. (China), Ørsted A/S (Denmark), Proman AG (Switzerland) and Wastefuel Global (USA). These are expected to build a production capacity for green methanol of at least 2025 tons per year in China and on the American continent by the end of 730.000. A seventh partnership with Debo was added in August. The Chinese energy company is to install 200.000 tonnes of biomethanol production capacity for Maersk.

Closed at the beginning of November Maersk also an agreement with the Spanish government. If a feasibility study is evaluated positively, the group wants to produce up to two million tons of green fuels there per year. In addition, it will be investigated how the entire value chain from renewable energy sources to ship bunkering can be covered. The regions named Andalusia in the south of the country and Galicia in the northwest are mentioned as production locations.
