(Berlin) - The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has launched three “hydrogen lead projects” with a funding amount of around 700 million euros. They are part of the federal government's national hydrogen strategy.

Result of the ideas competition

In the summer of 2020, the BMBF asked for proposals for large-scale industry-led projects with partners from science and business under the title “Hydrogen Republic of Germany”. As a result, 32 idea sketches were received and the three lead projects were formed from them. An independent expert committee evaluated the projects at the end of 2020 and found them eligible for funding. This means that “over 2021 partners are expected to develop the hydrogen technologies of the future for four years starting in spring 200,” said Federal Research Minister Anja Karliczek.

Use green hydrogen across the board

So that green hydrogen can be used across the board as quickly as possible, the lead projects are designed in such a way that “each of them breaks down hurdles that still stand in the way of a successful, efficient hydrogen economy.”

The “H2Giga” lead project is developing options for series production of electrolyzers in order to make the production of green hydrogen competitive and minimize production errors.

The lead project “H2Mare” deals with the production of hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives (methane, methanol, ammonia, fuel) using wind turbines without a grid connection directly at sea in order to minimize the costs of hydrogen production.

The “TransHyDE” lead project develops and tests options for transporting hydrogen over short, medium and long distances. It is intended to show what an efficient hydrogen economy could look like, from production to transport to use.
